Our History

What is Latched?

Having worked as Registered Nurses and Lactation Consultants for a combined 13 years in San Antonio, we have seen an increase in health disparities among the African American community and lack of engagement with community resources. As we talked about what wasn’t happening in our community and the lack of diversity among our profession, we started a breastfeeding support group during Black Breastfeeding Week, the first celebration of Black Breastfeeding that San Antonio has held in August 2017. We quickly realized that we were ready to answer the call to action to support breastfeeding in the San Antonio community.

Latched is a 501(c)(3) corporation eligible for tax-deductible donations. We offer services to all women regardless of economic status and are especially focused on African American and Hispanic women who find breastfeeding particularly challenging because of a general lack of support in their communities. We believe that focusing on these two groups of mothers could narrow many of the health disparities they currently experience and ensure a better outcome for themselves, their babies and their communities.

Ashley Green

Hi, I'm Ashley!! I'm a mommy of two beautiful girls, a proud tech wife, and co-founder for Latched. I fell in love with lactation years ago while working on my bachelors of science in nursing degree at the University of the Incarnate Word, I knew then that lactation was my true passion. After attaining my BSN from UIW, I then continued on, crafting my nursing career while working as a postpartum/mother-baby nurse.

After the birth and breastfeeding my first baby I then decided to become IBCLC certified so that I could better assist other breastfeeding mommies just like myself. While continuing to work as an IBCLC within the hospital system, and doing in home lactation consults through a local private practice, I've been part of developing Latched, in hopes to better assist moms throughout the community reach their breastfeeding goals, and to create a joyful long lasting breastfeeding experience. While yes, I am an RN/BSN and IBCLC, above all else I am a breastfeeding mommy just like you, and pride myself in aiding moms with the compassion and care from one mommy to another.

Veronica Haywood

Hi, I’m Veronica. I am so excited to be a Co-Founder for Latched and give back to my community. We started this with a vision of helping mothers come together regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic class. My passion for women’s health started from way before I started nursing school. I used to watch One Born Every Minute on Lifetime and think about how amazing it was to see a miracle everyday going to work. I can’t even put into words how I felt once I was in the role as a labor and delivery nurse. Over time I explored many areas of women’s health to include newborn nursery, new parent support case management, program management, and now lactation. I have found my calling. I love teaching. I love helping families make the transition from couplehood to parenthood. Although I may not have children yet, I find a deep fulfillment in being a footprint in family’s lives even if it’s just saying good job mom, way to go dad or giving someone a hug to simply know I support you. In my free time I enjoy eating at new restaurants with friends and family or hang with my puppy, Charlie, at the dog park!
